NJCL Sponsor Scholarships The NJCL provides two awards for chapter sponsors: the Miller Fellowships for NJCL Convention attendance and the David Levy Memorial Scholarship. Additionally, the Dr. Elizabeth Watkins award is available to any state certified teacher of Latin for three years or more. The Miller Fellowships are awarded to JCL sponsors who have either not attended a National Convention for five years or have never attended a National Convention. These awards have been made possible through a very generous bequest of the family of Mrs. Rhea Miller, formerly of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mrs. Miller served the National Committee for many years as Convention Adviser and always wanted everyone to have the opportunity to attend a National Convention. Each fellowship covers the cost of a registration packet for the NJCL Convention and is designed to stimulate attendance at the National Convention and increase interest in JCL. Applications for the 2008 Miller fellowships are available on-line and should be submitted by May 15, 2008 to David Volk The David Levy Memorial Scholarship, established in 1980, is awarded in memory of David Levy of Michigan, who served the National Junior Classical League for many years including as National Chair from 1974 until 1979. This $1000 scholarship is awarded every other year to help a current JCL sponsor further develop his or her teaching skills through workshops, advanced degrees, or summer study abroad. The sponsor must have been a member of the American Classical League for at least two years, including the year of the application. Applications for the 2008 David Levy Memorial Scholarship are available on-line and should be submitted by May 15, 2008 to David Volk The Dr. Elizabeth Watkins Latin Teacher Award was established by Dr. Dwight G. Watkins in memory of his wife, who taught Latin at Oak Hills High School in Ohio. The $500 award is to be used in any manner the awardee chooses. To be eligible for this award, applicants must be state certified as a Latin teacher and have taught Latin at the K-12 level for three years. Application forms are available from the NJCL Office. |
